North York, former city (1979–98), southeastern Ontario, Canada. In 1998 it amalgamated with the cities of Toronto, Scarborough, York, and Etobicoke and the borough of East York to become the City of Toronto.Southern York Region roughly includes the municipalities of Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill, while Northern York Region roughly encompasses the municipalities of Aurora, Newmarket, King, East Gwillimbury, Whitchurch-Stouffville and Georgina.North York is a suburb of Toronto that was a separate city until 1999 when six municipalities were merged into the present City of Toronto. In 1998, North York was dissolved as part of the amalgamation which created the new city of Toronto. It has since been a secondary economic hub of the city outside Downtown Toronto.Toronto is called “The Six” because six cities called Old Toronto, East York, North York, York, Etobicoke, and Scarborough were combined into one in 1998, forming the current city of Toronto.Generally speaking, North York is a better neighborhood than Scarborough. The schools are generally ranked higher, and the neighborhood is more “upscale”. Scarborough is quite diverse from an ethnic perspective, and is quite popular with new immigrants because of the lower cost of rent/housing prices.
